# How to add comments to a PDF drawing > How to add pin, rectangle, and callout comments to a PDF drawing in Xenmark, with tips for writing clear review comments. Each comment is numbered for you. Those numbers carry through to the PDF and Excel exports, so the engineering firm can address each item by number. ## Steps 1. **Open the drawing.** Navigate to your project, select the drawing, and open the revision you are reviewing. 2. **Choose an annotation tool.** Select the pin, rectangle, or callout tool from the annotation toolbar. 3. **Place the annotation.** Click or drag on the part of the drawing where the issue or change is located. Xenmark stores the position as a percentage of the drawing area so it remains accurate across different screen sizes. 4. **Write a clear comment title.** Use a concise title that identifies the issue — for example, "Grid line A-4 dimension missing" rather than "See drawing". 5. **Add a description.** Provide enough detail for the engineering firm to understand what needs to change and why. Include revision references or specification clause numbers where relevant. 6. **Save the comment.** The comment is saved, numbered, and added to the Review Panel. ## Tips for clear comments - One issue per comment. Multiple unrelated issues in one comment are harder to track and close out. - Be specific about location. If the drawing is dense, describe the area in the title or description rather than relying solely on the annotation position. - Attach relevant files where supported — photos, reference drawings, or extracts from a specification. - Keep language neutral and factual. The goal is a clear instruction for the engineering firm, not a record of frustration. - Not every observation needs a full comment.
